Antihepatotoxic activity of milk thistle fruit and silymarin has been known for many years. The positive effect on the liver is based on the antioxidant, membrane stabilizing, protein synthesis increase, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and anticolestatic actions of sylimarin and its major constituten, silybinin. Its clinical efficacy has been shown in several types for liver disorders, namely those produced by alcohol and those caused by virus. Several studies have established the chemopreventive role of sylimarin and silybinin in different cancer cell lines and its stimulating effect on lactation, as well as their beneficial effects in other areas (bone protection, neuroprotection, atherogenesis,e tc.). All these data point to possible new applications of the products derived from milk thistle that, in addition, show a wide therapeutic range and low toxicity (AU)

RESUMO

An herbal extract mixture and yogurt added to the herbal extract mixture were tested for their protective and therapeutic effects on ethanol-induced liver injury. The herbal extract mixture, yogurt and commercial drugs were used for treatment for two weeks prior to administering a single oral dose of ethanol (3 g/kg body weight). The herbal extract mixture and yogurt added to the herbal extract mixture were found to provide protection against ethanolinduced toxicity comparable to the commercial drug treatment, according to the serum and histopathological analysis. It was also shown that co-treatment with herbal extract mixture and yogurt against a triple oral dose of ethanol (2 g/kg body weight, over one week) provided protection against ethanol toxicity. After the initial set of experiments, the herbal extract mixture and yogurt treatments were extended for three more weeks. When compared to the positive control, further treatment with both the herbal extract and yogurt significantly reduced liver injury and resulted in a lower grade of lipid deposition.

Analytical studies of organochlorine biocides show that their concentration in the plants (roots) is higher than in the ground and particularly in the medicinal plants used in the therapy and the pharmacy industry. The most favorite Bulgarian drugs (Carsil, Tribestan and Nivalin Nivalin) contain plant extracts and they have to be analyzed in respect to European Community Directives EEC/76/895 and EEC/90/642 1998; In view of that the gas chromatography method for quantitative determination of organochlorine biocides (HCH and isomers, DDT and metabolites) was studied. Plant material from different regions of Bulgaria (fructus from Silybum marianum, L) and Carsil dragee produced by Sopharma Ltd. were analyzed in respect to European Pharmacopoeia regulations. The method was validated and analytical parameters specificity, linearity, precision, repeatability and range were studied
